Measuring progress

Progress against our aims is monitored and measured annually in the form of an annual report.

Retrospective review of travel to meetings pre-pandemic and travel-related CO2 calculations were carried out. This provided data on equivalent carbon emission savings, following a switch to virtual meeting environments (post pandemic) for all national meetings, working groups, training and CPD events. The findings are detailed in a report and are summarised within an infographic.

For any teams that wish to replicate this exercise locally, a ‘How-To’ guide has been developed to support health boards to measure and report on their own success in reducing staff travel requirements. This guide can be accessed via your Childsmile Coordinators.
We work closely with NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) National Procurement to identify low carbon alternatives where possible.

The reduction in single use mouth mirrors continues to be monitored through regular discussions with Childsmile coordinators. The change in board level use and subsequent waste reduction data has been incorporated within an infographic.
Support the NHS Scotland ambition to move towards 100% of Childsmile fleet vehicles being electric by March 2025.

Regular discussions with Childsmile Coordinators, allows the programme to monitor the movement to electric fleet by individual boards. Findings for the most recent review in 2024 have been incorporated into an infographic and boards continue to work towards operating with electric vehicles as contracts come up for review.
Work with NHS NSS to establish a nationwide recycling service for toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes called Recycle and Smile.

A review of all paper-based Childsmile resources was undertaken. Reduction in print volumes and calculations of equivalent carbon savings were incorporated into an infographic.
